Ancient Karauli was an
important state ruled over by the Rajput Kings. The
township was established by Arjun Dev in 1348. It’s
ancient name was Kalayanpuri driven from the Ancient
temple of Shri Kalayanraj ji situated in the palace.
“Karauli” means the
house of stone Karauli is famous for its red stone
quarries. It is said that the stones used for the
building of the forts of Agra and Delhi were taken
from Karauli.
The main city of Karauli
is surrounded by a red stone wall which was
constructed by Gopal Singh Ji Maharaj and the roads
though lanes and streets were made by red stones by
Bhawarpal Ji Maharaj. It was Bhawarpal Ji who brought
the image of Shri Madan Mohan Ji from Jaipur and
constructed a beautiful temple in the city palace.
To the south of Karauli
is the famous temple of Mother Kailadevi, it is
visited by lacs of devotees from far and near.
It was on 19th
July,1997 that Karauli was made the 32nd
District of Rajasthan. Karauli has a number of good
schools and colleges, It has a small general
Hospital. Kendriya Vidyalaya is a boon for the town
of Karauli. |
